WHY STUDENTS ARE PROTESTING: An open letter to parents

Dear Parents   and family members of Uni students,

WE URGE YOU PARENTS AND FRIENDS TO SUPPORT THE EFFORTS BY THE STUDENTS. THEY ARE YOUNG AND THEY NEED YOUR HELP.

This protest by University students – your sons and daughters –   is not like any other. We are fighting for the freedoms that we have come to take for granted   since 1975.

This is an urgent situation. You have to look at what is happening around you to get a clear picture.

PM is not upholding the constitution

As Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill MUST respect the constitution and the office of the Prime Minister. If there are allegations leveled against him, he must step aside and allow an investigation to clear his name. It’s that simple.

No political representation in Parliament

Who is representing you in Parliament? Which MP is speaking out against the corruption? Very few. Why did we vote them? To represent us when and to speak out when things go wrong. Are they doing that? NO.  Should they be removed in 2017? YES!

Police Commissioner is under political influence from the Prime Minister

Why did the Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, suspend Mathew Damaru and close the Fraud Squad office? Why did the closure of the office happen only after Senior Judge, Bernard Sakora and the PM’s lawyer Tiffany Twivey were arrested? Why has Jacob Ivaroa – a policeman with a corrupt background – appointed to be second in charge of the Fraud squad? The answer is simple: BAKI IS UNDER THE THUMB OF PETER O’NEILL

 Freedom of Speech

There is no freedom of speech anymore. It has been taken away from us! We are not allowed to hold political rallies and speak out against the wrongs done by government.   Today you have to get permission from the police to hold a protest or a public gathering.

This is wrong!

Democracy eroded

Police have prevented nearly every public gathering aimed against the government.   This is not a democracy. This is a DICTATORSHIP!

Media intimidation

The media is being threatened by politicians and the Prime Minister. Why do you think the National Newspaper, EMTV and the Post Courier have appeared biased? It is because they are threatened by the government to report positively about the government.

The government wants all SIM cards registered.

It would make sense if the government can be trusted. At present it can’t. SIM card registration means they can track you down if a stupid politician is unhappy with you about speaking out about what you see wrong.

Cyber crime Laws

New sets of laws targeting cyber crimes also threaten the rights of young bloggers and activists who criticize and expose wrong political decisions. The government can also use these laws to arrest those who speak out against the Prime Minister.

This is DICTATORSHIP! Not a Democracy!  I urge you parents to support us in this fight!

  3. Support for students stap, it’s the Govt tactic of suppression that is confusing students and their leaders including PNG people. All educated must advocate change and change will come. The so-called leaders clearly have shown total disregard for constitution and laws of the land, personal interest and greed have blinded them to the extent of not being representative of the voters.
    Get them out!!!!!
