Unedited Report from Bata  Dee in Wewak

It was an emotional & proud moment for me this afternoon at 4pm when I saw the 18 university students being escorted from the Provincial Police HQ to Wewak Town Police Station under heavy police escort. Let me tell you why.

Wewak Town, as usual was already winding down and there was just a small group of people still hanging around. The people quickly gathered around the police station. The students proudly announced that they have been arrested and will gladly go to prison for doing what is right . The crowd obviously were not happy at all and demanded that they be released.

It was then that the Governor for East Sepik Province, The Right Honorable Grand Chief Sir Michael T Somare came forward to address the crowd. Say what you want about the GC, but I tell you, this is a day I will not forget.
He came to negotiate with the PPC after learning that the students were arrested for exercising their democratic rights under the Constitution. The PPC was adamant that each of the students will be charged K500 each. It was just as well that the PPC did not go down to the Wewak Town Police Station to address the crowd as it could have turned nasty. But credit must go to all those police personnel who were present as they just observed and did not interfere.

Anyway the GC explained to the people the background of the current issues and the purpose of why the students were trying to do the awareness. He also assured everyone that non of the students will be locked up as bail money of K9000 will be taken care of by him. And in true Sepik Spirit, the small crowd of students, market mamas, street youths and others also dug into their own pockets to contribute towards paying for the bail.

It is on days like this that I stand tall and proudly proclaim that “Yes Mi Blo Sepik”.

Good Bless East Sepik & Papua New Guinea….
